Prof. Christa Sys, supervisor Chair Dennie Lockefeer, invited Prof. wouter verheyen, with whom she works closely, to give a keynote address at the 4th thesis prize ceremony. 🏅Professor Wouter Verheyen, proud promoter of Cato Verstraeten (gold winner 2022), Amber Waterschoot (gold winner 2023) and Victor Raeymakers, winner 2024. 📚 🔍He eloquently addressed the audience during his speech. In a very interactive way, he asked the question: 'Rights: compass, facilitator, engine or obstacle for sustainable inland navigation?'. The previous two laureates had robust legal knowledge, closely interwoven with the interdisciplinary expertise that the master's program in logistics management offers. In the field of research, we are witnessing an increasing interaction between various disciplines. In collaboration with the Department of Transport and Regional Economics (TPR), Professor Verheyen delved further into the domains of innovation and the intersection of law with ecological, social and economic sustainability. When exploring innovative processes and products jointly, the legal impact can identify prohibition signals and risk implications, alleviating the barriers that hinder successful implementation. Moreover, when faced with various alternative options, legal insights lead us to the path of least resistance. Professor Verheyen's words resonate with the dynamic convergence of law and progress, shaping a sustainable future.🚢 👏 A special thanks to all our partners who make this event possible each year, as well as the family de Deckere-Lockefeer. 🔗 For more information, visit our website https://lnkd.in/ejbsfWPS #ThesisAward #InlandNavigation #SustainableFuture #Education #Research

I want to share the latest paper from my PhD trajectory, titled “The impact of critical water levels on container inland waterway transport,” which has just been published in Transportation Research Part D. https://lnkd.in/giubTbBE The paper analyzes all instances where inland waterway transport navigability was affected by extremely low and high water levels along the Rhine River from 2000 to 2022. A SARIMAX econometric model is employed to study the implications for container cargo. The insights assist in adjusting expectations and formulating effective responses to future disruptions: 1. #Risk awareness: The results highlight the increasing risks of critical water levels, intensified by climate change, and their impact on sustainable transport. 2. #Mitigation: The research identifies a critical time window during which stakeholders can implement strategies to prevent significant disruptions. 3. #Adaptation: After estimating the time required for cargo flow to stabilize following a disruption, we discuss feasible policies aimed at reducing uncertainty and enhancing transport resilience. I am thankful for the guidance and support from my supervisors, Edwin van Hassel, Joris Beckers, and Peter Shobayo. Acknowledgments to Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) and Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR) for providing essential data to conduct this research within the project NOVIMOVE - smart & sustainable waterways.
