From textbooks to tarmacs! 📚🛩️ For one day, the maritime and logistics students of the University of Antwerp and Antwerp Management School swapped the lecture halls for a cockpit. For over 55 years, the organisation JEUGD EN LUCHTVAART has been providing educational flights to students, allowing them to explore Antwerp’s port from above. This way, they get a grasp of the port’s scale and its significance to global logistics. Talk about taking your studies to new heights! More about our maritime programme 👉 www.uantwerpen.be/mlm

My ultimate goal when joining C-MAT - MSc in Maritime/Air Transport Management was to participate in Decarbonisation in Shipping. 👍Most fortunately I am currently conducting my Dissertation with the Royal Belgian Shipowners' Association (KBRV) on the following research question: “What are the main problems with the current #CarbonIntensityIndicator formula and how can it be improved?”. ✅ To summarise, our team has observed an overall discontent in the shipping community, not because of the legislation’s goal to «force» the sector towards low emission scenarios. But because the framework is somewhat unfair with certain subsegments and niches, causing #CompetitionImbalances ⚓. See some examples: - 🏗🚢Neglection of substantial ship differences, especially in #CorrectionFactors. F.e. a self-unloading bulk carrier using the crane onboard will increase fuel consumption, (which means it can save consumption from shore crane) which is disregarded in current formula. - 🚢Cargo Utilization Ratio (#UR), is unmentioned. Prioritising Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) and Nautical Miles. Given a case in which two sister vessels navigate the same distance, the vessel with the most cargo will therefore obtain a higher consumption. Resulting on a decreased CII Rating. Differently, this vessel will be actually having a lower emission rate per ton of cargo transported. - ⛈🚢 Based on existing trading patterns, #AdverseWeatherConditions can increase consumption or Nautical miles to deviate risk areas. -⏳⚓Unpredictable, idling or #PortDelays can increase consumption adding no Distance to the denominator. - 🚢 🛢🚢 Inconsistency in correction factors, which are not applicable to all vessel types. Need for extra clarity with definition of parameters (Ship-to-Ship), or too complex. - ❌🚢 Perverse Incentive: Current framework may give room for vessels to increase absolute emissions. This differs from the original intention of CII. F.e., vessels are not encouraged to increase laden voyages, on the contrary they are incentivized to increase ballast sailing distance. Up to here it might give the impression we are not in favour of the #CIIframework. This is totally the opposite! We have also obtained positive feedback from many industry stakeholders, agreeing in the fact that CII is being greatly useful to increase the awareness on #Decarbonisation and emissions. Once the revision period is over, we believe it will be a greatly improved tool to mark the correct pathway for the sector to reach the International Maritime Organization #NetZero GHG emission goal to be achieved by or around #2050. I wanted to specially thank my peers for sharing this learning experience and final brochure to this academic year Algie Donado, SeungMyeong (Brian) Yang, An-Sofie Dieltiens. Not to forget our coach and promotor Christa Sys & Celine Audenaerdt. 🏁🇧🇪

It's always a bit special and challenging to give an interview for a news broadcast with more than 6 million viewers in full primetime... But honestly, I felt a bit proud that I was contacted via Peter De Meyer by the French Television 📺 station #France2 on Friday to describe the import flow of Chinese electric cars to #Europe. It is always nice that they ask supply chain insights from a "little 🇧🇪 Belgian" from the University of Antwerp / Antwerp Management School about this topic. This question was part of a larger TV report about the high level of "inventory" of Chinese 🇨🇳 cars in European Ports, like the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. Link: https://lnkd.in/ezsvky4C I explained that many Chinese car 🚘 manufacturers (Polestar, Lynk & Co, BYD, Zeekr Europe, #MG, #GWM, NIO, #SAIC, etc.) use an eCommerce 💻 supply chain model for car imports. Instead of using a wide network of dealers to distribute cars to, and hence use a #decentralized inventory model with a "short last mile", many Chinese car manufacturers do not have these wide dealer networks (as they sell a significant amount online), which implies they use a #centralized supply chain model: all inventory on 1 location with a "long last mile". Not only Chinese manufacturers are using this supply chain model, also Tesla is using it. This means as well that as from the moment a small "dip" occurs in sales, the central inventory location immediately has a surplus of cars, what you see now in many seaports in #Europe. My explanation to the interviewer was almost a copy💡 of my introduction lecture in most of my supply chain lectures at University of Antwerp / University of Antwerp - Faculty of Business and Economics / Department of Transport and Regional Economics TPR / Antwerp Management School / C-MAT - MSc in Maritime/Air Transport Management: I always use the example of car supply chains to show the difference between central inventory systems and decentralized inventory systems by focussing on the difference between "traditional car dealer networks" versus "new online centralized networks". A trend for European 🇪🇺 car manufacturers to keep in mind: they are adapting but not at the speed the Chinese manufacturers and Tesla are doing... Also an attention point for the European Commission. #ecommerce, #lastmiledistribution , #supplychainmanagement

A fortnight ago, the seminar on International Port Strategy, co-organized by C-MAT - MSc in Maritime/Air Transport Management - Antwerp Management School, International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) and APEC, kicked off with 25 enthusiastic participants from 11 different countries. Meanwhile, they have already completed the modules on 'Global macro-economic and geopolitical shifts', 'reflection on climate change, energy transition and sustainabilty' and 'changes in the global supply chain', where a lot of theoretical and practical examples were discussed. The modules on 'Regional evolutions in port development' and 'Port Management & Strategies' are still on the agenda at the end of this week and the beginning of next week, before the participants travel to Antwerp to observe all this in practice with port visits and by exchanging knowledge with the various speakers and each other. We are already looking forward to welcoming them in person from May 13th to May 17th ! #Internationalportstrategy #Porttraining

Wouter Van Bockhaven and I will discuss the theme 'Tackling supply chain #paradoxes and #dilemmas' in a webinar, organised by the Antwerp Management School. A #sustainable and #resilient global #supplychain is key to ensuring the long-term health and prosperity of both the planet and its inhabitants. But finding effective answers to the current supply chain dilemmas is far from easy. During this #webinar, we will look into dilemmas such as #offshoring versus #nearshoring, #air versus #maritime transport, #efficiency versus #ecology, #cost versus #reliability versus #speed, and #B2B versus #B2C. We will analyze and discuss these paradoxes and dilemmas and shed light on current and future geopolitical risks. #Registration is free through the link below.
